“When the NeXT Station proved to be yet another disaster, Steve finally faced up to the truth: the Holy Stevian Empire was collapsing. He considered closing the doors on both companies and getting put of business altogether, but he had been in business since his part-time job at the electronic parts shop as a teen. Waking up in the morning without a company to return or challenging business decisions to make seemed like a bleak, miserable, uninviting way to live.

Under the circumstances, shutting down the business was undeniable the only real choice, yet it seemed unthinkable. Steve closed his eyes to logic and common sense. Instead, he tightening his belt and crossing his fingers. He ordered nearly one-third of staff to be laid-off”. (pp.183-184, from 『iCon』)


“This raked among Steve’s darkest moments, but it was to get even worse, The Japanese company poured in still more, possibly as much as another $70 mn, for a total $200 mn, according to Wired. 1993, Steve had to face the reality; the only way to keep NeXT afloat any longer was by shutting down the hardware business. A reporter who interviewed him when the decision became public found him “fragile, depressed, and withdrawn”. Ross Perot became disillusioned with Steve’s management style, bailed out, and wrote off his investment.

   - 브랜드는 그 선택의 순간을 도와준다

 

사람들은 디자인을 겉치장으로만 생각합니다. 디자이너는 컴퓨터의 기판이 들어 있는 상자를 넘겨 받고 “멋지게 보이게 만들라!라고 지시를 받습니다.   하지만 우리는 디자인이란 그런 것이 아니라고 생각합니다. 이것은 “어떻게 보이는가?”나 “어떻게 느끼는가?”의 문제가 아니라 “어떻게 기능하는가?”의 문제입니다. (NYT와의 인터뷰)


 Q. Apple 만의 독특한 “포괄적이고 단순한” 디자인을 창조할 수 있는 비결?


어떤 문제를 해결하기 위해 고민한다고 가정해보지요. 이때 제일 먼저 떠오르는 해결책은 매우 복잡한 것입니다. 그러나 대부분의 사람들은 여기에서 멈춰 버리지요.

하지만 그 뒤에도 궁리하고 문제와 씨름하며 양파 껍질을 몇 장 더 벗겨내면 종종 아주 우아하고 단순한 해결방법에 도달할 때가 있습니다.

대부분의 사람들은 그런 해결 방법에 도달하기 위해 시간과 에너지를 소비하지 않는 것이지요.

고객은 현명하며 진정으로 곰곰이 생각해서 만들어낸 제품을 선호한다고 저희는 믿습니다.

Q. What can we learn from Apple’s struggle to innovate during the decade before you returned in 1977? 

( Business Week October 12, 2004) 


“You need a very product-oriented culture, even in a technology company. Lots of companies have tons of great engineers and smart people. But ultimately, there needs to be some gravitational force pulls it all together. Otherwise, you can get great pieces of technology all floating around the universe. But it doesn’t add up to much. That’s what was missing at Apple for a while. There were bits and pieces of interesting things floating around. But not that gravitation pull”.

1. Apple Ⅲ: ‘81년, 업무용. 하드웨어의 신뢰성 확보 실패, 동년 출시된 IBM PC가 시장의 주도권

 

2. Lisa: ‘83년, 그래픽 사용자 환경, 비싼 가격($9,995) 탓에 시장이 외면, 1년후 등장한 메켄토시에 의해 밀려 났음.

 

3. Next Computer: ‘89년, 기능면에서 시대를 앞선 제품이나, 지나친 고가로 판매 실패.

 

4. Puck Mouse: ‘98년, Jobs의 Apple 복귀 첫 작품iMac은 성공했으나, 마우스는 너무 작은데다 커서의 움직임을 파악하기 어려워 소비자 불만. 

 

5. Cube: ‘00. 깔끔한 플라스틱 육면체의 소형 테스크탑으로 각종 디자인 상을 휩쓸었으나, 가격이 비싼 반면에 기능적으로 차이가 없어 판매에 실패.

 

6. iTunes phone: ’05년, Apple Motorola와 제휴하여 ROKR라는 이름으로 출시한 전화기, 노래 100곡 저장 가능, 전화 네트워크을 통해 음악을 다운로드 받는 것이 안됨.

 

7. Apple TV: TV와 Mac 컴퓨터를 연결해 영화와 음악을 즐길 수 있도록 한 제품. 설치가 불편하고 흐릿한 영상이 단점.

제품: 통합주의

 

天稟에 가장 맞는 것에 집중할 때, 運이 따르고 성공할 가능성이 가장 높다.

 

   - Jobs는 engineer가 아니라 artist 기질의 경영자였다.        

     예로 맥캔토시에서도 Jobs가 가장 잘 아는 것은 케이스

     였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 hardware에 집착했고 그 결과 실패(NeXT, Pixar)

 

Jobs 성공은 software에 집중, artist 감각을 살린 design, Organizer의 특징을 살린 다기능 제품. 

 

가능성에 대한 뜨거운 熱望을 포기하지 말라
